Women's Slanted Shell Slippers - 9 US Sizes Available - Free Crochet Pattern

Initially, I was inspired by a magazine submission prompt of spring scraps to work on some slanted shell slippers. From this, I created the Women's Slanted Shell Ballet Slippers. Afterwards, I thought since the slanted shell stitch was such a beautiful stitch pattern that it should be used in some slippers that had a longer foot covering, and so I went back to my pattern and reworked it to cover more of my foot, but still fit comfortably around my ankle area. Even happier with this version than with my initial ballet slipper version!

Materials:

     - 77 - 121 yards (small amount) of heavy weight Worsted Weight Yarn - I used Red Heart's Super Saver (JoAnns)
     - I9/5.5mm Crochet Hook
     - Tapestry Needle for Weaving in Ends

Material Notes:

     Yarn Alternatives: Bernat's Super Value Yarn, Caron's One Pound, Hobby Lobby's Crafters Secret;
Secondary Alternatives: Red Heart's With Love, Hobby Lobby's I Love This Yarn, with a J10/6mm Crochet Hook.

I did make and test out some slippers using Vanna's Choice Yarn, and while they worked up well, the yarn wasn't as durable as the Super Saver yarn and became rather frizzy rather quickly. I also choose the Super Saver yarn because it has a nice cushion to it, and feels quite nice as it hugs your feet. For anyone with concerns regarding the rough feel - it will get softer after the first wash.

Time Spent:

You will be able to have a pair completed in roughly 1 hour 30 minutes minutes to 2 hours (depending on size).

Measurements:

Included are Women's US sizes 4 through 12.5. Foot sizes are included below. Choose the one best suited for your foot. Half sizes included for reference, but slipper size will be to whole size.

Gauge:

Using an I9/5.5mm Hook and Red Heart Super Saver - 4" x 3"
Chain 13, HDC in the 3rd chain, and each chain across. (12 HDC)
R2 - 7: Chain 1, turn. HDC in the 1st stitch, and in each stitch.
     Fasten Off.

Abbreviation/s:

     SC - Single Crochet
     HDC - Half Double Crochet
     DC - Double Crochet

Pattern Notes:

Shoe sizes are not the same throughout - I have learned that through much research as I am sure many of you have realized while shoe shopping. Foot lengths are included below - choose the one that best suits your foot. For example, I wear a size 8.5 sneaker and 9 sandal. My foot size is 10" so following the numbers below, I made myself a pair of the size 9 - 9.5 slippers.

Having the beginning increase split on either side of the beginning chain helps keep the seam straight, as does the turning during the slanted shell parts.

Joining is to be done into the first stitch, not the beginning chain.

I suggest weaving in beginning tail after finishing round 3.

Finished slipper will be about two inches shorter than foot. If using other yarns other than I named, your ease could/will probably vary.

Watch for turning and joining directions! Not the same throughout.

Yarn has a lot of stretch to it so these should be fine for narrow and wide feet, but if you put it on and think the width needs to be adjusted to fit your foot better, I'd suggest subtracting one stitch (to make narrower) or adding one stitch (to make wider) from the beginning work into the ring.

TO FINISH: Chain 1, Turn slipper inside out.
Working through both layers, slip stitch across the back of the slipper to close up the back of the heel.

Fasten Off and Weave in Final End.

The finished slippers will seem on the smaller end at first, but that's normal! They will stretch with wear. I suggest putting on top part first, and then pulling on heel part. After you wash them, they will be easier to put on (and softer!).
