Cowl Shoulder Cozy - Crochet Pattern Review - Red Heart/Salena Baca

On the January 1st, I decided I was going to take some projects off my to-do list by actually doing them - hehe. I created a list of projects that stuck out to me at first glance, and the yarns needed to work them. I had actually not seen this pattern on the Red Heart site, but was very happy when I came across it while searching through pattern using Medley Yarn. I found one of my favorite yarns on sale at my local JoAnn's - Deborah Norville's Serenity Chunky. I decided to buy some and work up this Cowl Shoulder Cozy. I also had not used Medley Yarn before so I wasn't sure how well the Serenity Chunky Yarn would work in place of it, but with a slight hook change, it worked out great!
Behind the Scenes... I was trying to use my camera to take photos of myself in this Cowl Shoulder Cozy, which was difficult on it's own, but even more so when you add in a curious cat. This photo on the left is the best I got this time (I think) and it was photo bombed by Shiloh, hehe!

Materials:
     - Chunky/Bulky Weight Yarn - I used 4 Skeins of Deborah Norville's Serenity Chunky in Almond to work the Medium Size
     - N15/10mm Crochet Hook (two sizes up from recommended)
     - M13/9mm Crochet Hook (two and a half sizes up from recommended)
     - #18 Tapestry Needle
     - Cowl Shoulder Cozy, Free Crochet Pattern

Material Notes:
Red Heart's Medley Yarn used by Salena. I believe two strands of a heavier weight worsted weight yarn would work well too, like Red Heart's With Love or Hobby Lobby's I Love This Yarn.

Time Spent:
I had my Shoulder Cozy ready to wear in 3.5 hours.

Measurements:
Capelet measured 43" in length prior to whipstitching by about 7.5" in width unstretched

My Gauge:
Using Serenity Chunky Yarn & an L11/8mm Hook - 3" x 3":
Chain 9, DC in the 4th chain and in each chain across. (7 DC)
R2 - 4: Chain 2, turn. DC in the 2nd chain and in each chain across.
     Fasten Off.

Pattern Notes:
I loved working up the Shoulder Cozy! It was fun and different than my usual project types. I have even worn it out a few times and have gotten some nice compliments on it.

One of the things I liked about this Shoulder Cozy was the length. I have worn ponchos before and didn't like the way they hung around my elbows or just the feeling of being constricted around the arms. One thing I would alter about the next Shoulder Cozy I make though would be to add just a little bit more to the length. I realized while wearing it out on a cold winter night that I didn't have much room to pull my exposed arms up into. It made me think, "so that's why the ones I don't like are made this way" because the part of my arms not covered by the Shoulder Cozy was feeling it! But rather than adding too much, I would just add another repeat of the pattern.

With so many size, yarn type and color options, I would love to see them! Please share your photos on my EyeLoveKnots Facebook page, or our latest Yarn Fanatic Party Link Up!
