Seeing Stars Basic Baby Beanies in Celebration of Veterans Day - Free Crochet Pattern

Back in October of last year, I published my first version of a Crochet Beanie in All Sizes. I have changed quite a bit from then to now, and so here is an updated version of my Newborn, 3-6 Month and 6-12 Month Sizes. These beanies are great to use as the basis of other hat types. Embellishment how you wish, change the length to make a cloche style or roll up brim or make it in a rainbow of colors.

I've included the Star Applique Pattern at the end of the pattern. Use a G6/4.25mm crochet hook. You could use a bigger hook size, but remember a bigger hook size will produce a bigger star and it may or may not fit on the little hat.

Keep in mind that different yarns will work up a little bit differently in the sizing. This particular pattern was written using Hobby Lobby's I Love This Yarn because this is one of the yarns that I use the most. Working with other worsted weight yarns could produce a slightly smaller or larger product so make sure to check your gauge!

These are great hats to work up for donation to your local baby hospital :) Remember to use soft acrylic or cotton yarn that machine washes and dries well and weave your ends in really, really well!

Materials:
     - Less than 125 yards of Worsted Weight Yarn (per Hat) - I used Hobby Lobby's I Love This Yarn in RedWhite and Royal [Blue]
     - I9/5.5mm Crochet Hook (for Hats)
     - G6/4.25mm Crochet Hook (for Star)
     - Tapestry Needle - an 18" or 20" will work well for this!

Material Notes:
Yarn Alternatives: Red Heart's With Love. Due to allergies, I do not suggest wools for baby - soft acrylics and cotton only.

You may opt for a Light Worsted Weight Yarn (#3) if working a star for a newborn size hat as the star applique is a little large.

Time Spent:
I worked up the newborn size in just under 30 minutes, the 3-6 month size in just about 30 minutes and the 6-12 month size in just over 30 minutes.

Star can be ready to go in about 10 minutes.

Measurements:
The Newborn Size has a crown of 4.25" in diameter, a circumference of nearly 13.5" to fit a head size of 13" - 14", and is 5" in length.

The 3-6 Month Size has a crown of 4.75" in diameter, a circumference of nearly 15" to fit a head size of 15" - 16", and is also 5.25" in length.

The 6-12 Month Size has a crown of 5.5" in diameter, a circumference of nearly 17.5" to fit a head size of 17" - 19", and is 5.5" in length.

*Stretch depends on your yarn brand selected. The I Love This Yarn and Red Heart's With Love have about two inches worth, while a yarn such as Deborah Norville's Everyday Soft yarn has about an inch to an inch and a half.

Star Measures 3.5" from point to point.

Gauge:
With I Love This Yarn and an I9/5.5mm Hook = 4" x 4"
Chain 16, DC in the 4th stitch, and in each stitch across. (14 DC)
R2 - R8: Chain 2, turn. DC in the 2nd stitch, and each stitch across.
     Fasten Off.

Abbreviations:
     SC - Single Crochet
     HDC - Half Double Crochet
     DC - Double Crochet
TR - Triple Crochet [yarn over twice, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull through (4 loops on hook), (yarn over, pull through two loops) 3x]
QUAD - Quadruple Crochet [yarn over three times, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull through (5 loops on hook), (yarn over, pull through two loops) 4x]

Pattern Notes:
Join to the first stitch, not the beginning chain (unless otherwise directed).

Beginning chain 2 does not count as stitch unless otherwise stated.

To keep a straight seam I worked my hat in a specific way, not entirely noted below. The crown is written as I worked it, but for each of the repeat rounds of the hat (for the body of it), I alternated between working the first DC into the first stitch, and working the first DC into the second stitch. Doing so, forced either the first DC to be in the same stitch as the beginning chain 2, or the last DC to be in the same stitch. This is similar to how you would work the stitches if you were turning at the end of each round. Feel free to work the hat how you feel comfortable - mine is just a suggestion for the technique).

If you choose to work color changes (I didn't) - work them in last part of stitch. For assistance, see my How to Change Colors in Crochet the EyeLoveKnots Way post.

I finished my hat with an invisible join. To see a photo tutorial of this technique, see the Pattern Notes section of my Newborn Twin Chunky Hat post.

If you are interested in making this a cloche like fit, subtract about 0.5" from length.
