Plastic Canvas Fox Earrings - Jewelry DIY & Free Plastic Canvas Pattern

I have wanted to share this earring tutorial since last Thursday but my job has really worn me out and I have gotten behind in my posts. I am going to try harder to preschedule my posts on the weekends.

Before I go into the tutorial and pattern, make sure you check out my Cute Fox Earring Etsy Treasury Features from last week, and if you are a fellow Etsian, please heart it and the items within it!

Hope you enjoy this free plastic canvas pattern and jewelry DIY!

- Small Amount of Worsted Weight Yarn - I used Red Heart Super Saver in Black, White and Carrot, and Lion Brand's Vanna's Choice in Dusty Blue
7 Mesh Plastic Canvas - I used soft, but stiff will also work
- Tapestry Needle - I suggest a #18
- 2 Earrings Wires - I used the 20mm Stainless Steel Ear Wires from AliCsSupplyShop
- 12 8mm Jump Rings - I used Stainless Steel of a Variety Pack from AliCsSupplyShop
- Jewelry Pliers - I use two (one in each hand) but one will suffice.

Material Notes:
Yarn Alternatives: Bernat Super Value, Caron One Pound, Hobby Lobby's Crafter's Secret.

Time Spent:
It took me about an hour to stitch and cut out the fox pieces, and then was done with the earring assembly in about 15 minutes for a total of about an hour and 15 minutes.

The plastic canvas portion of these earrings measures 2" wide by 2" in length, and the whole earring dangles 3".

Pattern Notes:
If you need help with cutting or stitching, check out my Small Plastic Canvas Hearts post.

If you don't like the way your carried yarn looks on the back of your finished piece, you can add a piece of felt, just make sure you don't glue it too high as you will still want to get the jump rings through the holes in the corner. I didn't, as I like the way it looks and it isn't really visible to anyone.
To Open a Jump Ring:
Grab one end of your jump ring with your round nose pliers.
You will need to grab the other end with another pair of pliers or your fingers for leverage and stability.
Pull open the jump ring TOWARDS you, not side to side.

Plastic Canvas Pattern:
Square is 12 holes wide by 13 holes in length.

Work the slashes as continental stitches, as well as the remaining uncolored spaces within the marked corners. Whipstitch around the edges after.
1 - Stitch Orange portion.

2 - Add in Black portion.

3 - Finish fox with White portion. I cut my fox square out at this time, but you can do it before beginning.

4 - Begin working the background. I did so from the stitch above the right ear, and worked in a counter-clockwise motion. Should you be low on yarn, I suggest changing it on the second-to-last row, rather than at the border.

5 - After finishing the last stitch of the background, bring the needle up through the bottom right stitch and begin whip stitching around counter-clockwise for the border. I like to work two stitches per hole so they isn't any space left along the edges, sometimes three in the corners.

6 - Ta Da!
Earring Tutorial:
1 - Open and begin attaching jump rings at the top two corners.

2 - Continue to attach jump rings.

3 - You will have five jump rings on each side. The one remaining jump ring will attach both sides.

4 - Open last jump ring, grab the top jump ring from the right side...

5 -  ...And then the top jump ring from the left side - DON'T close yet!

6 - Also put on earring wire. Close jump ring.
Repeat for second earring, and you have a new pair of cute fox earrings to wear!
