Crochet Basic Beanie ALL SIZES - with I Love This Yarn - FREE Pattern

About a month ago, I posted the 3-6 Month Basic Baby Beanie - with Everyday Soft yarn. Recently, I decided I wanted to work some Fall Inspired Owl Hats so I revisited this free pattern.

After working the crown, I realized that the change in yarn also changed the sizing a tad bit. Although small, it changed it enough to change the sizing.

Since I've been planning for A WHILE now to create my own beanie pattern/s to follow - being that I haven't quite found the 'one' yet - this was the perfect opportunity to do so.

I have sat down before to work on a basic beanie pattern and each and every time I have gotten discouraged or frustrated with the sizing or being interrupted at work or what-have-you, but this time it all fell right into place. I didn't really even have to think about it. How awesome!

I had the day off yesterday and spent ALL DAY working on this.

Keep in mind that different yarns will work up a little bit differently in the sizing. This particular pattern was written using all Hobby Lobby's I Love This Yarns because this is one of the yarns that I use the most. Working with other worsted weight yarns could produce a slightly smaller or larger product so make sure to check your gauge!

Materials:
   - Worsted Weight Yarn - I used Hobby Lobby's I Love This Yarn in Brown,  Yellow, Sungold, Forest Green, Cream, Purple, and Cranberry.
*One 7 oz (355 yards) skein will make multiple hats - two of the largest size, more of the smaller sizes.
**Although not matched up yet, I believe the gauge should also be met with Red Heart With Love Yarn.
   - H8/5mm Hook (Newborn, 3-6 Month)
   - I9/5.5mm Hook (6-12 Month, Toddler, Child, Small Adult, Large Adult)
   - Tapestry Needle for Weaving in Ends - I like to use a #18, or #20.

Time Spent:
I was able to complete the newborn size in just under 30 minutes, the 3-6 Month size in about 30 minutes, the 6-12 Month size in just over 30 minutes, the toddler size (1-3 Years) in about 45 minutes, the child size (4-8 Years) in just under an hour, the small adult size in just about an hour, and the large adult size in just over an hour.

Measurements:
All of my head circumferences and lengths are just the average head circumference and lengths for the range. You can find the range of sizes per size in the How to Design Your Own Custom Crochet Beanie post by Lorene of Cre8tion Crochet - link found below in the Pattern Notes of this post.
For the newborn size, crown measures 3.75" in diameter to fit a head circumference of about 13.75", and is 4.25" long.
*PLEASE SEE PATTERN NOTES REGARDING NEWBORN SIZE.
For the 3-6 Month Size, crown measures 4.25" in diameter to fit a head circumference of about 15.5", and is 4.75" long.
For the 6-12 Month Size, crown measures 5.5" in diameter to fit a head circumference of about 19.5", and is 5.5" long.
For the Toddler Size, crown measures almost 5.75" in diameter to fit a head circumference of about 20", and is 6" long.
For the Child Size, crown measures 6" in diameter to fit a head circumference of almost 21", and is 6.75" long.
For the Teen/Small Adult Size, crown measures just about 6.5" in diameter to fit a head circumference of about 22", and is 7.5" long.
For the Adult Large Size, crown measures just about 6.75" in diameter to fit a head circumference of about 23", and is 8.5" long.

   Using 5mm Hook - 4" x 4"
CH 16, DC in 3rd ST from hook and ea ST across. (14 DC)

Pattern Notes:
If you need help creating a custom sized beanie, check out Lorene of Cre8tion Crochet's How to Design Your Own Custom Crochet Beanie. Great post!
*I did not follow this for creating these beanies but it has lots of great information if you aren't sure how to create your own plus it has size charts in it (which I use and used).

To work my joins in the crown, I used the Seamless Round method also by Lorene of Cre8tion Crochet. This method is great for hiding your seam! My pattern is not phrased the correct way for using her method - it's phrased the old fashioned slip stitch to join way.

Join to the first Double Crochet, not the Chain 2.

Chain 2 does not count as a stitch.

10.24.14 UPDATE: My sister-in-law, Bree, is a family photographer who does LOTS of newborn photo shoots. Following the posting of this All Sizes Beanie pattern, I whipped out quite a few newborn sized hats based on the chart provided by Lorene of Cre8tion Crochet. According to her, the newborn head circumference is 13-14" and the length should be 4" - 4.5". Upon completing my hats, I made a trip to her house to deliver them and she turned all of them away. She said they were sure not to fit any of the newborns that she photographs and that they would be better suited for preemie's. SO - my suggestion for newborns would be to make the 3-6 Month Size as that one is exactly what she liked and requested for future hats.

Please feel free to make and sell these basic beanies, but please DO NOT claim this pattern as your own nor should you sell my pattern, and DO NOT re-publish my photos as your own. DO NOT copy and paste my pattern anywhere, link to it instead.

Now that I have a basic pattern for each size and one of each on hand, it will make working other versions of the basic beanie much easier - such as determining where to add the stripe/s to a striped beanie.

I have a couple ideas in mind, but feel free to send in your requests!

Don't Crochet but Interested in Purchasing One?
I have some hats available in my Etsy shop. Feel free to send in your custom color or size requests. Some yarn options include: Red Heart With Love, Hobby Lobby's I Love This Yarn.
